This edition serves as a portable companion to a large thick paperback with the same title. It is abridged in several respects, so should not be regarded as containing the complete story on its own. The paperback can be ordered under ISBN-10 1534-717153 or ISBN-13 978-1534-717152 or directly from the printer at https//www.createspace.com/6349899
Mark and Kevork Toroian, born in rural Turkey to an Armenian family, narrowly escaped death in the genocide of 1915-1918. They were little boys at the time. Their parents, siblings, friends, uncles, aunts, and essentially all the other Armenians in their entire town died in the massacre. One of the two survivors, Mark, wrote it all down, after he had the luck to survive and emigrate as a college student. Mark’s first-person story forms the principal narrative of this book. The younger brother, Kevork, also had sufficient luck to survive the genocide, but was forced to wait in Egypt for another three decades until an Act of Congress allowed him to emigrate to join Mark in the United States. Kevork’s story – a Kafkaesque bureaucratic nightmare – is laid out here in the form of letters, rather than narrative.
We of the succeeding generation have restrained our editing to the bare minimum, allowing the reader to see both the genocide and the obfuscation just as they were described by the original participants, at the time when the events actually occurred.
This book is not for the faint of heart.
Once I was an Orphan Two Armenian Brothers Survive the Genocide eBook Mark Toroian
This was written by my grandfather and for me it is sentimental. We preserved his original voice, grammatical style and all so as not to change the way it reads. I do not believe I have ever read a more detailed and infectious account of survival. His courage to walk back into the ruined areas of his childhood and to search through hell and highwater for his brother at such a young age is the most inspiring thing I have ever heard of. To have it all written in his voice is a priceless treasure and a glimpse into his memories of pastoral old Armenia.Product details
